Order of Draw - What is it?
Phlebotomy is not only just about drawing blood. It all factors in with proper care and the handling of the specimen that will be used for laboratory testing. It is very important that the specimen samples are not contaminated or effected in anyway that the accuracy and quality of the analysis are not compromised.
To avoid cross-contamination of additives between tubes, blood must be drawn in a specific order. The procedure is the same for all types of tubes being used. It is vital that the order of draw is followed not only to avoid contamination, but also to make sure that the test results are accurate. The smallest error in the analysis could mean that the patient might not receive the most appropriate care and treatment for his/her specific case (Order of Draw Explained: Clearing Out Any Confusion).
